“Howzat” Corporate Cricket Day

January 27, 2008

Ever wondered what it would be like to face Australian pace bowling legend Geoffrey Lawson? Ah, Cricket… It ’s the sport of gentlemen where ladies can excel too!!
“HOWZAT” – the roar goes up from the stands, the flags wave, whistles blow, hand clackers buzz, the “ducks” bob up and down and the national anthem is piped across the field. The perfect setting for your Corporate Cricket Day.

This is a fun event that suits any staff, regardless of fitness levels. There are a number of ways the game can be played so that everyone gets to join in the fun - and the competition! Even better, it is a great event to build spectator activities around, from BBQ’s and other off field events, to themed Aussie support squads and “Balmy Armies”

From groups of 20 to a cast of 100’s, there are lots off opportunities for your company to benefit. It can be played at places like the actual Don Bradman Oval in Bowral, to a specially prepared pitch ina council approved park in your area.

With any corporate event it is important to have event managers specifically to ensure that all the things that need to happen before, and on the day, are coordinated successfully. The correct preparation and behind the scenes facilitation are important in making even seemingly simple events seamless and enjoyable for all participants. Not only that, but also some of the “little extras” that are added to a day to make it special are often conceived and implemented during the preparation process.

Team building has become one of the newest buzz words!

January 23, 2008

Team building has become one of the newest buzz words in the corporate lexicon. In fact, for at least the last decade surveys of business leaders in every industry have shown that the prime characteristic they look for in new hires is the ability to work with a team. And why not? Research has shown that when people work in teams, they can accomplish far more than a group of individuals working together. But not all team building activities are created equal. Over the last few years, some industry experts have leveled criticism at the ‘quick-fix’ attitude that has been adopted by many companies who attempt to create or sponsor their own team building activities.

In order to be effective, say experts in corporate teams, a team building event must:

  • Be integrated with real work goals.
    • It’s not enough to plan a fun day of activities for your team. The team building event that you plan should help focus the members of the team on what’s not working and what needs to happen for the team to work together.
  • Be part of an overall company goal.
    • Plan team building activities and events as part of the company’s overall plan for success. That means more than just a one off event to go buggy riding. Team building events should be an ongoing, annual or semi-annual event.
  • Be planned by a team.
    • After all, the goal is to promote teamwork. The planning team should model the behavior that you expect it to promote.
  • Be followed up with real work integration.
    • A one off event that has no follow up in the work world will be seen as a holiday at best – and a cynical attempt at manipulation at worst. To be meaningful, team building efforts must continue beyond the event day.
  • Be reinforced by rewarding teamwork and team behavior.
    • Once you have a team that’s working as a team, you need to reinforce that behavior by rewarding it. Recognition of teams that are working exceptionally well, specialcorporate events to mark team accomplishments and notice in the company newsletter are all ways to reinforce and reward teamwork within your company.

If planning an event that will do all that seems daunting, keep in mind that there are companies who make this their business. A corporate events planner can offer your company custom team building activities that are designed to help your employees and coworkers focus on the importance of working together as a team by providing focused activities that require each participant to work as part of a team. Don’t just hire on a company to throw a do for your organization. Seek out a real professional with experience and expertise in building exercises that build teams.

Why do Team Building Games, Team Building Events or Activities?

January 20, 2008

Team Building Activities are stimulating problem-solving tasks designed to help group members develop their capacity to work effectively together. Many team building and initiative tasks are like kids games, others are novel, complex tasks and designed for specific needs. More elaborate initiative tasks can involve ropes courses, night-time activities, and exercises lasting over several days.

Several work environments require somewhat a bit of teamwork in order for things to run smoothly and with motivation to each in everyone. Team building activities are usually used to create a relationship between coworkers or co employee. On the other hand, various work environments want teamwork but the employees work separately. Employees working jobs like these really need team building activities to help them stay related with other workers.

Team building activities are often used in meetings, presentations, workshops, training seminars, education programs, corporate training, with college, high, middle, elementary and pre-school school groups, sport teams, teacher training, youth work, and correctional settings. Team building exercises can be adapted for virtually any setting, young or old, large or small, and across cultures. An important part of team building exercises is participants’ reflection and discussion about the activity, how they approached the situation, and possible points of learning. For example, a group could be videoed during an activity and the video watched, analyzed, and discussed, to help extract potential learning from team building exercises.

Employee motivation benefits from team building games, exercises, activities, puzzles and quizzes. I try to use free team building games and exercises ideas to warm up meetings, training, and conferences. These free team building games are also great ice breakers for training sessions, meetings, workshops, seminars or conferences. Team building games and activities are useful also in serious business project meetings, where games and activities help delegates to see things differently and use different thinking styles. To ensure these team-building activities comply with equality and discrimination policy and law in respect of gender, race, disability, age, etc. Although some of the team building activities seemed way too intense for our particular needs, many sounded like they would be perfect for us. Best of all, he could teach us these team building activities over the course of a two-day workshop held right in our offices. This sounded pretty good, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get approval from my boss for the budget expenditure.

I didn’t give up on this; still I started searching for affordable or free team building activities online that contained excellent team building activities. I decided to try a couple of these first that I found online with a proof that this team building activities work well. And I have a better chance to my boss of getting approval for this kind of training in the upcoming.

I’ve learned that through team building activities I know how to maintain a consistent front for the customer is far better than making special accommodations that can not always be encountered. Mainly, the team building activities centered on inconsistencies. People like consistency. Surprises, especially when it comes to meals, are not well received. One of the team building activities concerned in a taste test. It was a cooking work of art. After we done the test, the chef brought out the same dish. It had sour undertones that didn’t suit the taste of the food.

The second cooking work of art does not match the process of a nice testing, and the chef repeated it. He sent the second and the same dish and it tasted exactly like the original. I know that this second-rate dish wasn’t nearly as good as the initial sweet dish but we flavored the second because we knew what to expect.

The other side of team building activities can also help health care workers maintain consistent information to patients. I get frustrated when one nurse told me to stop breastfeeding after 12 months while a second nurse in the same pediatrician’s office suggested that I continue. The conflicting information communicated to me that this staff seriously needed team building activities.

Exciting and innovative team building activities are tailored for our clients to powerfully illustrate the importance of strong teams, and a strong culture. High impact and challenging, yet safe and inclusive, these signature events can be delivered for the entire company, specific business units or any project team or group within an organization. The mixture of action and learning is developed to suit your team and your needs.

Amazing Race Around Sydney Team Building Activity

January 18, 2008

The race is on… Split into teams with each team making their way around Sydney. Equipped with maps, clues and some extra props, team members need to find their way to specific sites.

Travelling to each spot can take any form with some routes requiring specified transport like a water taxi, Harley Motorcycle or by foot for example. At each stop they will have a task to do… whilst the greatest challenge remains in working out the destinations to head to, by figuring out the clues and hints to their final finishing destination.

Like the TV show, The Amazing Race, the winning team is the first over the line after completing all of the tasks.

It all starts at a designated location, where the teams are briefed, given all equipment and their first task – to find your first mode of transport. A series of cryptic questions and clues lead each group to their next step on a scenic and fun trip around Sydney.

This may involve catching the monorail or water taxis to meet a FUN challenge, following clues through the Royal Botanic Gardens along the edge of Sydney Harbour or even hiding behind bushes to catch the Kodak moment of the day to win the most points! Before they begin, they need to work out an entertaining team name! Then they are off!

Throughout this fabulous day, they will be given vouchers to present to receive in return for some goodies, they may be edible, require action or be a clue to the next spot! Directed with hints, the transport modes and roads will be left to their interpretation. However there will be a help line for dire strait situations…it will cost them points though!

On completion of the day, they will be led back to the final spot for a debrief. Here, times will be recorded and tallied. At the group’s lunch or dinner, they can sit and relax over a drink whilst the presentation of the winners is made. This is also when the photos taken during the day will be displayed. This is a great afternoon full of challenges, FUN, games and surprises.

Multi-Way Tug-of-War Team Building Game

January 15, 2008

Fun, finale-type activity. Physically exhausting and emotionally climaxing

  • Works for kids through to corporate programs. Ideal for adolescents and possibly youth at risk. Especially with older adults, be careful with this activity, especially if they are unfit or if overexertion is contraindicated (e.g., heart problems).
  • Use for any size groups, indoor or outdoor. Ideal is large group outdoors. Pick a soft location e.g., grass/beach.
  • In traditional 1 on 1 tug-of-war it is mostly strength that wins, with a few tactics.
  • In multi-way tug-of-war it is mostly tactics that wins, with some strength.
  • Lay out the ropes, etc. as shown in diagram below.
  • Participants should prepare appropriately e.g., watches and hand jewellery off.
  • Divide into groups and make sure the groups appear to be of similar strength.
  • Brief group on normal tug-of-war safety rules, basically:
    • no wrapping or tying rope around anyone or anything - only hold rope with hands
    • watch out for rope burn on hands - let go if rope is moving through hands
    • watch out for rope burn on body - let go if you lose footing
  • First command from the Tug-of-War master is “take the strain”. This is only to take up the slack, that’s all. The
  • Tug-of-War master makes sure the centre ring is stable and centered. This needs strong leadership because teams are always keen to add extra strain!
  • Second command is “Go!!”
  • Teams attempt to pull the center ring or knot over their finish line. This can rarely be achieved by strength alone and instead will require guile. Teams can swivel to cooperate / compete with other teams, then switch directions, etc.
  • Conduct several rounds. Continue, say, until one team earns 3 victories and the Tug-of-War title.
  • Allow teams plenty of time to physically recover and debrief/plan after each round.
  • Team building groups may wish to discuss what the secrets to success were in this activity - and whether these lessons apply elsewhere.

Help with Team Building Event

January 15, 2008

race melbourneOur question this week comes from Brad Hauck:

“We are having a team building day for around 20 people. We want some games that aren’t too physical..due to our age but that are still fun to all. Any ideas pls?”

Well Brad, you could try walking frame races ;-) no? Seriously though, there are a range of fun games that require team effort. Volleyball is always a favourite and you can allow that catching of the ball before sending it back over the net.

Thanks!

Race Around Brisbane - Team Building all over Brisbane

January 15, 2008

brisbane race around

This amazing team adventure is a fusion of group think, interactive challenges and a race against time across, through and over the streets, river and bustling CBD of Brisbane.

The adventure includes team challenges, physical challenges, and problem solving tasks, team building challenges and interactive game playing. By using the template of The Amazing Race in conjunction with team dynamic training, the adventure has all the excitement of the TV show along with strong team growth components.

The experience begins with a fun brainteaser that helps spread the teams’ departure times by a few minutes. Teams are allocated a resource kit with travel vouchers, cash budget, maps and directions, as well as the rules for the day.

Thank you VERY much for providing a great afternoon on Friday! Every person in the team enjoyed it and is still talking about it. The photos you provided captured the day well and have been passed around the team. People from other teams think the concept is great for a team building day and have asked to see the photos. It’s a pity that we only hold team building days once a year; we now have to wait a full year before we can arrange something again!
