The First Steps to Successful Team Building
May 22, 2009
It’s not enough that you hire the best team building bureau in the planet. Holding team building activities daily wouldn’t be sufficient either. Even following the latest fads on the team building world wouldn’t do. You’re missing important facts that are crucial to making team building activities work.
You have to make your people understand the benefits of team building activities or they would lose the last bits of interest that they would participate in one. This is an underlying principle that many forget to consider. The following are a few guidelines.
You have to let your team know that they are A Team. You have to instill to them that everything about them now is a team feat. You have to emphasize their being as a team, working as a team with combined efforts, all to achieve the goals you have set for them to finish. Reward them as a team, for succeeding as a whole. Train them holistically. Involve them in your decisions. A good practice would be to ask them what team building event they would like to do this time.
After acknowledging your people as a whole, you also have to recognize each of them as a part of the whole team. You have to make your team building activities work for each team member as well. If a member doesn’t see what good he will benefit from an activity, he’ll have a lower self-esteem and won’t be willing to participate in your games. All your team building efforts will be a waste. Try to address to each of your people’s struggles at the workplace through a series of different team building games that can be applied to everyone as well.
Lastly, you have to reward their efforts. While prizes at games do work and boosts the self esteem, it doesn’t always have to be like that. You can reinforce team identity through clothing and accessories for example, that have your team logos on them.
